ASB2 inhibits lipid accumulation to promote ILC1 homeostatic fitness and anti-tumor immunity in the mouse liver

A protein called ASB2 helps certain liver immune cells survive and fight tumors. These immune cells, called ILC1s, patrol the liver and help stop cancer from spreading there. Mice without ASB2 in these cells had fewer of them, because the cells stored too much fat and died. Blocking fat buildup with a drug kept the cells alive and helped mice live longer when they had liver tumors from colon cancer.

Restored clearance of senescent neutrophils by tissue-resident macrophages limits organ aging

Blocking a single chemical signal in old mice kept their bodies working like young ones. Aging bodies pile up worn out immune cells called neutrophils. Normally, cleanup cells inside organs clear these worn out cells away. As we get older, this cleanup slows down. Old cells pile up and damage nearby tissue. Scientists found a receptor, a kind of switch on cleanup cells, that controls this slowdown. Turning that switch down in old mice kept their brains sharp, kept their muscles strong, and kept their hearts, fat tissue, and whole body healthier. The same worn out cells and switch problem showed up in aging and sick human tissue too. A drug that blocks the switch restored normal cleanup in the lab.

Reducing this one signal in aged mice prevented cognitive decline, frailty, muscle loss, extra fat, heart problems, and body wide inflammation.

Neural circuits for stress-induced water drinking in relief of anxiety

Mice often drink water right after something stressful happens. This study found the brain pathway behind that habit. Mild stress turns on a thinking part of the brain. That part sends a signal down to a thirst center, and the mice start drinking. Drinking then turns on a second pathway that reaches a reward center in the brain. This releases a brain chemical tied to pleasure, and it helps calm the stress-related anxiety.

Rising dust pollution across Europe in a changing climate

Dust from deserts is drifting into Europe more often, and it may be making air quality worse. Scientists built a computer model to track tiny dust particles in the air. They used daily measurements from many European sites, from 2012 to 2021. Dust levels were higher in southern Europe than in the north. In the south, big dust events were linked to a small rise in daily deaths. An ice record from the Alps shows dust has more than doubled since before factories and industry began. Drying land in North Africa is the main cause.

The caveat
The daily air measurements only cover 2012 to 2021, so they cannot show patterns from other time periods without relying on older ice core data. The link between dust and deaths does not prove dust directly causes death, only that the two rise together.

In a model, healthier diets by 2050 would cut global farm value by 1.6 trillion dollars.

A model looked at what would happen if the world shifted to healthier diets, cut food waste in half, and farmed more efficiently by 2050. Global farmland would shrink by 6%. Farm production would fall 17% below current plans, and total farm value would drop by 1.6 trillion dollars. Meat farming would shrink a lot, while fruits, vegetables, nuts, and beans would grow instead.
