On the Stability and Sensitivity of Climate‐Informed Flood Frequency Models

A capped flood model gave steadier, more realistic flood estimates than older climate-based methods.

Kichul Bae, Jeongwoo Hwang et al.

Older models that predict floods from climate data can give wildly unrealistic flood sizes. A new model puts a cap on flood size and learns from nearby rivers with similar weather patterns instead of using every river the same way. Tested on 548 rivers across the United States, it gave steadier, more realistic flood estimates, especially during heavy rain.
