Evolution of the High-energy Excess in Swift J1727.8-1613 during Its 2023 Flare State

In a black hole system, extra high-energy light came from fast-kicked electrons, not just heat.

Xiao Fan, Bei You et al.

A black hole system gave off extra high-energy light during a bright flare in 2023. This light could not be explained by normal slow heating alone. Scientists found the extra light came from electrons getting kicked to very high speeds. At the same time, three blobs of material shot out along a jet from the black hole.

The number 2.08 to 2.61

The range of photon indices measured for the extra high-energy light during the flare.

One black hole system, one flare event studied.
